Aims: The aim of the present study was to describe an aerobic, mesophilic and heterotrophic bacterium, designated RA26, able to produce a medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). It was isolated from a French Polynesian bacterial mat located in the atoll of Rangiroa. Methods and Results: This micro-organism, on the basis of the phenotypical features and genotypic investigations can be clearly assigned to the Pseudomonas genus and the name of Pseudomonas guezennei is proposed. Optimal growth occurs between 33 and 37 degrees C, at a pH between 6 4 and 7 1 and at ionic strength of 15 g 1(-1) of sea salts. The G+C content of DNA is 63.2%. Under laboratory conditions, this bacterium produced a novel, medium-chain-length PHA, mainly composed of... |

Pseudomonasguezennei biovar. tikehau was isolated from a microbial mat on the atoll of Tikehau in French Polynesia, and is able to synthesize medium chain length poly-beta-hydroxyalkanaote copolymers when grown on coprah oil. A two-step cultivation process was used and the biosynthesis of PHAs was followed along 52 h by regular culture sampling. The polyester was purified from freeze-dried cells and analysed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infra red (FTIR), and gas chromatography mass spectrometries. The copolyester produced by P. guezennei biovar. tikehau from coprah oil mainly consisted of saturated monomers, i.e. 3-hydroxyoctanoate (3HO) and 3-hydroxydecanoate (3HD), and the monomeric composition of the polyester did not change... |

Three bacterial isolates identified as Alcanivorax borkumensis SK2, Rhodococcus erythropolis HS4 and Pseudomonas stutzeri SDM, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, were isolated from crude oil enrichments of natural seawater. Single strains and four bacterial consortia designed by mixing the single bacterial cultures respectively in the following ratios: (Alcanivorax: Pseudomonas, 1:1), (Alcanivorax: Rhodococcus, 1:1), (Pseudomonas: Rhodococcus, 1:1), and (Alcanivorax: Pseudomonas: Rhodococcus, 1:1:1), were analyzed in order to evaluate their oil degrading capability. All experiments were carried out in microcosms systems containing seawater (with and without addition of inorganic nutrients) and crude oil (unique carbon source). Measures of total and live... |

Bacteria that attach to surface aggregate in a hydrated polymeric matrix of their own synthesis to form biofilms. These represent microbial societies with their own defense and communication system. Transitioning from acute to chronic infection is frequently associated with biofilm formation.Bacteria in biofilms are innately more resistant to antimicrobial agents. The presence of indwelling medical devices increases the risk for biofilm formation and subsequent infection. The current antibiotic therapies are of limited effectiveness in resolving biofilms infection. This review attempts to discuss the stages in biofilm formation, their pathogenic mechanisms, effect of antimicrobial agents, detection and eradication of the biofilms. |

Aim The spoilage potential of 28 bacterial strains isolated from spoiled raw yellowfin tuna was evaluated. Methods and Results Bacterial species were inoculated in irradiated tuna matrix. Chemical changes, bacterial growth and sensory quality were monitored during aerobic storage at 8°C. Pseudomonas spp., Enterobacter spp. and Escherichia hermanii had no spoiling effect. Brochothrix thermosphacta and Carnobacterium divergens/maltaromaticum developed moderate unpleasant odors. Hafnia paralvei and Serratia spp. released strong off-odors (pyrrolidine, sulfur/cabbage). No bacterial group (except H. paralvei) combined with Pseudomonas spp. deteriorated the sensory quality of tuna. When C. divergens/maltaromaticum was associated with H. paralvei or B.... |

Coffee husk and coffee pulp are coffee processing by-products. Coffee husk is obtained when harvested coffee is processed by the dry method, and coffee pulp is produced by the wet method. In Brazil, coffee is usually processed by the dry method, therefore an expressive amount of husk is obtained every year. Some of the husk is used as organic fertilizer but, other applications are very limited, mainly because it is a bulky product. The presence of tannins and caffeine diminish acceptability and palatability of husk by animals. This review discuss degradation of caffeine by microorganisms, with special attention to bacterial, biological decaffeination of coffee husk and pulp and its subsequent use on animal feeding. The known biochemical routes of caffeine... |

Halo-tolerant, auxin producing bacteria could be used to induce salt tolerance in plants. A number of Rhizobium and auxin producing rhizobacterial strains were assessed for their ability to tolerate salt stress by conducting osmoadaptation assay. The selected strains were further screened for their ability to induce osmotic stress tolerance in mung bean seedlings under salt-stressed axenic conditions in growth pouch/jar trials. Three most effective strains of Rhizobium and Pseudomonas containing ACC-deaminase were evaluated in combination, for their ability to induce osmotic stress tolerance in mung bean at original, 4, and 6 dS m-1 under axenic conditions. Results showed that sole inoculation of Rhizobium and Pseudomonas strains improved the total dry... |

Bacterial and protozoan populations were monitored in orchard soil amended with Brassica napus seed meal. Numbers of fluorescent pseudomonads peaked one week following incorporation of the amendment and declined thereafter, whereas populations of Streptomyces spp. increased to stable levels nearly 20-fold higher than in non-treated soil. The amoeba-flagellate Naegleria americana, isolated from the amended soil, showed a marked feeding preference in culture for fluorescent pseudomonads relative to Streptomyces spp. Amended soils showed rapid declines in RSM-derived cis-oleic acid that paralleled increases in the numbers of bacteria and proportion of bacterial fatty acid markers in the soil. Arachidonic acid, which reached peak levels one week after seed... |
